The used car market in South Africa is currently thriving, showing a 14% month-on-month increase in July with 31,707 sales, totaling nearly R13 billion.

Data from AutoTrader indicates that the Ford Ranger led the sales with 1,903 units, followed by the Toyota Hilux at 1,540. The VW Polo and Polo Vivo competed closely for third and fourth place, with the Polo winning at 1,384 sales versus 1,179 for the Polo Vivo.
In fifth place, the Toyota Fortuner attracted 756 buyers, while the Mercedes-Benz C-Class secured sixth with 565 sales, just ahead of the Suzuki Swift at 513.
The Nissan NP200 edged out the BMW 3 Series for eighth place, selling 497 units compared to 471. Finally, the Isuzu D-Max, a newcomer, saw a 30% increase in sales to 436, moving up four spots from June.
Average Pricing Trends
In July, the average price of a used car rose by 0.4% to R409,238, with an average age of five years and mileage of 75,227 km.
All brands gained market share except Kia, which declined by 13%.
AutoTrader’s CEO George Mienie attributes this growth to an upswing in the new car market.
“An increase in new car sales is beneficial for used cars,” Mienie explained, noting it indicates better consumer finances and encourages future used car sales.
