Chinese automaker Dongfeng is entering the South African market with the “Box,” a new all-electric hatchback aimed at budget-conscious buyers. Here’s what you need to know about the vehicle’s launch, specifications, and Dongfeng’s broader plans.

New Electric Cars South Africa: Dongfeng Introduces the “Box” Hatchback

The South African automotive market continues to diversify, with another Chinese brand stepping in. Dongfeng, one of China’s “Big Four” state-owned automakers, is launching its first South African model — the all-electric Box. This addition expands the roster of New Electric Cars South Africa, giving buyers more options in the entry-level EV space.

Dongfeng: A Historical Overview

Founded in 1969, Dongfeng began by manufacturing commercial and military vehicles. Over the years, it has transformed into a major player in China’s passenger vehicle industry, placing a strong emphasis on electric mobility — similar to BYD’s strategy. The brand now joins FAW, Changan, and SAIC Motor in targeting South African buyers.

The Dongfeng Box: Specs and Features

Set to debut in early 2025, the Dongfeng Box will compete in the affordable EV segment. While official pricing for South Africa has not been released, its market positioning suggests it will compete with the Dayun Yuehu S5 and BYD Dolphin, in the estimated range of R399,900 to R539,900.

Dimensions and Powertrain:

  • Powertrain: Front-mounted electric motor
  • Power Output: 70kW and 160Nm
  • Battery: 42.3kWh
  • Top Speed: 140km/h
  • Range: Up to 430km (claimed)
  • Charging: DC fast charging (30–80% in 30 minutes)

Interior and Tech Features (Expected):

  • Two-tone faux-leather upholstery
  • Wireless smartphone charger
  • 12.8-inch infotainment screen
  • Digital instrument cluster
  • Automatic climate control
  • Ambient interior lighting
  • Heated seats
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane-keep assist
  • 360-degree surround-view camera

These features make the Dongfeng Box a strong contender among Affordable EVs South Africa, offering premium features at a competitive price.

Future Plans: Expanding the Dongfeng Lineup

Dongfeng has confirmed the launch of two additional models in South Africa by the end of 2025. While the exact vehicles remain unnamed, the Dongfeng 007 — already available in right-hand drive — could be among them.

As more EVs enter the local market, supported by automotive blogs and policy initiatives from the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic), South Africa’s electric car landscape is becoming increasingly vibrant.

Final Thoughts: More EV Choice for South Africans

With the introduction of the Box and more models in the pipeline, Dongfeng is signaling a long-term commitment to South Africa. The entry of new players like Dongfeng adds competitive pressure, increases consumer choice, and fuels the momentum behind New Electric Cars South Africa.
