The South African bakkie segment is heating up once again. Chinese automaker Chery South Africa has revealed bold plans to introduce two bakkies — including a unique transformable 7-seater unibody model — starting in 2026. This move positions Chery as a serious new contender in one of the country’s most competitive vehicle markets, going head-to-head with segment leaders like the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger.

A Transformable 7-Seater Bakkie: A First for the Segment

Chery’s upcoming unibody bakkie stands out as something entirely new for South African drivers. According to Tony Liu, Executive Deputy General Manager at Chery South Africa, this vehicle will serve as both a 7-seater SUV and a double-cab bakkie, depending on how it’s configured.

“We’re going to bring two kinds of bakkies. The first one is going to be a unibody pick-up. But that bakkie is unique… it’s not only a bakkie but it’s also a 7-seater,” Liu explained during an interview at the South African Auto Week 2025 in Gqeberha.

This means drivers can use the vehicle like a family car during the week — and then transform it into a bakkie for outdoor adventures by simply removing the canopy. It’s a multifunctional approach designed for South Africans who need one vehicle that can do it all.

While powertrain details are still under wraps, Chery confirmed that the vehicle is in the R&D phase, with first units expected in late 2026.

Traditional Ladder-Frame Bakkie to Launch First

Before the arrival of the transformable 7-seater, Chery will launch a ladder-frame bakkie built to take on established workhorses like the Hilux and Ranger. This model — previewed as the Chery Himla at Auto Shanghai 2025 — is designed for rugged performance and practicality.

Chery has already taken over a bakkie manufacturing base in Shandong Province, China, which will supply this model to global markets. According to Liu, this ladder-frame version will be a 5-seater double cab, similar in layout and size to the current segment leaders.

The Himla is expected to offer multiple powertrain options, including:

  • A 2.3-litre turbodiesel engine producing 120 kW and 420 Nm
  • A 2.4-litre turbopetrol motor with 118 kW and 230 Nm
  • Future hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions, including a potential diesel hybrid

This variety of drivetrains could make the Himla an attractive option for both private buyers and fleet operators in South Africa.

A Fresh Take on South Africa’s Bakkie Market

South Africa’s bakkie segment is currently dominated by the Hilux, Ranger, and Isuzu D-Max, with a growing presence from Chinese competitors like GWM P-Series and Foton Tunland G7. By launching two different bakkie platforms — rugged ladder-frame and versatile unibody 7-seater — Chery is signaling a strategic two-pronged entry aimed at both traditional buyers and families who want flexibility.

The 7-seater unibody model is particularly noteworthy because it could create a new vehicle niche: a practical city car during the week and a lifestyle bakkie on weekends.
