BYD’s new 350kW Shark 6 Performance has landed in South Africa. Here’s what’s changed, what it costs, and how it stacks up against the Premium and its rivals.

The Shark 6 Just Found an Extra 29kW — And a Reason to Cost R160,000 More

South Africa’s most powerful bakkie has just become considerably more powerful. BYD has launched the Shark 6 Performance locally, a flagship plug-in hybrid double cab producing 350kW — enough to widen the gap the standard Shark 6 already opened up over Ford’s Ranger Raptor when it first arrived.

A Quick Note Before We Go Further

This is a fresh-off-the-press launch article covering confirmed pricing and specifications, not a full behind-the-wheel test of the Performance derivative specifically — BYD only revealed local pricing in July 2026, so we haven’t logged kilometres in this exact variant yet. What follows is grounded in confirmed manufacturer figures, alongside what we already know from testing the closely related Shark 6 Premium.

What Actually Changed Under the Bonnet

The standard Shark 6 Premium pairs a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with electric motors on each axle for 321kW and 650Nm. The new Performance model swaps in a larger 2.0-litre turbocharged unit, lifting total system output to 350kW and 700Nm — a 29kW and 50Nm gain that shaves the 0-100kph sprint down to a claimed 5.5 seconds, two-tenths quicker than the Premium’s 5.7 seconds.

Just as significant is the towing upgrade: maximum braked towing capacity jumps from 2,500kg on the Premium to a genuinely useful 3,500kg on the Performance — a figure that finally puts it on par with serious diesel workhorses, addressing what was arguably the standard Shark 6’s biggest practical shortcoming against traditional bakkie buyers.

Battery, Range, and the PHEV Trade-Off

Despite the power hike, the Performance model retains the same 29.58kWh battery pack as the Premium, offering a claimed electric-only range of up to 80km — 5km less than the Premium’s 85km, presumably down to the demands of the larger engine. Combined WLTP range comes in at up to 640km on a full tank and charge, versus 670km for the Premium.

In practice, that means most daily commuting can realistically be done on electric power alone, with the petrol engine serving as backup for longer trips or when charging isn’t convenient — a genuinely useful setup for South African buyers wary of relying purely on public charging infrastructure.

What You’ll Pay, and How It Stacks Up

The Shark 6 Performance is priced from R1,149,900, a R160,000 premium over the Shark 6 Premium’s R989,900 starting point. That pricing still undercuts rivals like the Isuzu D-Max 3.0TD DC AT35 4×4 and Ford’s own Ranger Raptor 3.0T V6, both of which sit north of R1.15 million — making the Shark 6 Performance a genuinely competitive proposition if outright power and towing capability are what you’re chasing at this price point.

Ownership costs are backed by a 5-year/100,000km vehicle warranty, an 8-year/200,000km battery warranty, and a matching 5-year/100,000km maintenance plan — identical cover to the Premium model.

New Touches Beyond the Powertrain

BYD has also fitted the Performance derivative with a new column-mounted gear selector, freeing up space around the centre console, along with a dedicated crawl mode for low-speed off-road control. Buyers can choose from four exterior colours, including a new “Outback Orange” hue exclusive to the Performance model, alongside “Obsidian Black,” “Snowy White,” and “Atlantis Grey.”

Should You Buy the Performance Over the Premium?

If towing 3,500kg matters to you — a boat, a horse trailer, a decent-sized caravan — the Performance’s upgrade alone justifies the R160,000 jump. If your usage leans more toward daily commuting with the occasional light load, the Premium’s slightly longer range and lower price tag remain the more sensible pick.

We’ll follow up with a full road test the moment we get proper seat time in the Performance derivative. In the meantime, it’s worth browsing auto24.co.za if a well-specced used bakkie might tide you over, and EV24.africa is a solid resource for tracking how plug-in hybrid and electric options continue reshaping this segment locally.
